The Cactus Sanctuary began to take shape thanks to Dr. Héctor Nolasco Soria (CIBNOR), who championed the appreciation of the cacti so characteristic of this peninsula. It was inaugurated on June 5, 1997. On this ecotourism trail, it is possible to observe various outstanding species, such as the cardón barbón or hecho (Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum), the senita or “cabeza de viejo” (Lophocereus schottii), the cardón pelón, the garambullo, the Baja California pitaya—both sweet (Stenocereus gummosus) and sour—as well as chollas and prickly pear cacti.
One of the great attractions of the place is the cardón and mesquite trees, some over 500 years old, true witnesses to the passage of time in this ecosystem. It’s not just the flora that takes center stage: during the tour, you might spot hawks, iguanas, turtles, coyotes, and various bird species, creating scenes worthy of close observation.
In addition to welcoming national and international tourists, this reserve is home to researchers and scientists from the Northwest Biological Research Center (CIBNOR), who actively work to conserve and protect the local flora and fauna.
