Birdwatching in Los Cabos: A Must-Do Experience in Baja California Sur

Birdwatching in Los Cabos.

The birds that grace the skies are also part of the paradise we call Baja California Sur.

Birds represent a fundamental link in the food chain of an ecosystem, providing an essential balance for wildlife and humans. They control pests and help eliminate the carcasses of other living beings, mitigating diseases dangerous to other animals and humans, and eliminating fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

Birdwatching is one of the lesser-known activities in Los Cabos. Thanks to the region’s beautiful landscapes and diverse biomes, we can appreciate a wide range of species from the mountains to the beaches.

Professor Emer García, currently a researcher and professor at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) in areas such as zoology and flora and fauna monitoring, in addition to being one of the region’s foremost environmental experts and educators and author of several identification guides, held the first Bird Festival in Los Cabos on October 4th, where important talks and exhibitions were held. The public was able to learn more about the importance of caring for our environment to preserve our habitat, as well as about highly significant species in the area, from national and international experts. They also participated in birdwatching activities in different locations. Above all, they sought to raise awareness about conservation so that future generations can enjoy the beauty of the birds that surround us every day and understand that they are an essential link in the food chain.

Throughout her extensive experience, Emer García emphasizes that Los Cabos is undoubtedly a privileged place for observing pelagic birds, as visitors from the Southern Cone, such as the Red-footed Booby, and from the northern Cone, such as the White-naped Scoter (Canada and Alaska), converge.

Since Los Cabos lies between the tropics (Cancer and Capricorn), birds from both hemispheres converge, creating an extraordinary biome for birdwatching enthusiasts.

It’s very satisfying to know that the scientific studies conducted in our destination can receive awards and recognition, as they reflect an active interest in preserving the different species that inhabit both the mountains and the sea.

Exploring trails, oases, mangroves, coastal, and mountain areas can provide an incredible opportunity to explore natural resources. Strategic points, such as the Santiago Oasis and its impressive canyons, the La Purísima and San Ignacio oases, El Palmar in Todos Santos, and the Estero de San José, among other places, are worth exploring.

Birdwatching in Los Cabos is a unique experience that connects visitors with the region’s immense biodiversity. Birdwatching in Los Cabos offers a unique opportunity to connect with the region’s rich biodiversity. With its strategic location on the Pacific migratory route, Los Cabos becomes a temporary refuge for numerous migratory birds fleeing the northern winter cold. Among the species to be observed are colorful hummingbirds, elegant herons, and majestic pelicans. Additionally, the area is home to endemic species, including the Peninsular Masked Warbler. The region’s wetlands, beaches, and canyons provide ideal habitats and refuges for these birds, giving professional and amateur birdwatchers the opportunity to enjoy nature while contributing to its conservation and understanding of these fascinating creatures. For those interested in supporting wildlife conservation beyond birdwatching, visiting an animal sanctuary in Cabo San Lucas provides an inspiring way to connect with and protect the region’s incredible fauna.

We strongly believe that humans bear the most significant responsibility for the endangered status of many species, due to mismanagement at the government level and private activities that directly affect the environments where many of them thrive.

Although many of these places are well visited, in most cases, studies are not conducted on their carrying capacity, which is essential for understanding their natural value, protecting them, and raising awareness of the fragility of their habitats. This is crucial for ensuring that future generations can enjoy a natural environment with a fully healthy biodiversity.

More than 115 bird species live in the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve alone, many of them endemic.

Among the most representative are the Mirlo de San Lucas (endémico), Cuicacoche Bajacaliforniano (endémico), Gorrión de Corona café de San Lucas (endémico), Junco Sudcaliforniano (endémico), Cardenal rojo, Cardenal Pardo, Rascador Moteado (endémico), Golondrina Azulnegra, Vireo Gorjeador de La Laguna (endémico), Correcamino norteño, Codorniz Californiana, Tecolote Enano del Cabo (endémico), Buho Enano del Cabo (endémico), carpintero de pechera Alidorado, Carpintero de Gila, Carpintero Bollotero de La Laguna, Zopilote Aura, Halcón Cola Roja, Aguila Real, Cernícalo Americano, Aguila Pecho Rojo, among many others that are true works of living nature.Let us become beings capable of understanding that the life of every being that inhabits this planet has a purpose and a goal to fulfill.
