Often, when visiting a destination as prestigious as Los Cabos, we forget to look around. Therefore, we want to show you one of the historical treasures of this part of the Baja California Sur peninsula.
El Triunfo is a small town located 150 km north of downtown Cabo San Lucas. It had its heyday in the 19th century, when a significant number of workers settled there to develop the mining industry. The extraction of gold and silver in this region meant significant economic growth not only for the region but also for the country.
The economic activity generated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was so significant that El Triunfo had th e privilege of receiving one of the most important acquisitions of the time (in 1882): the first steam-powered vehicle, which was dubbed the “Locomobile” by a chronicler who wrote an article about this great event. In the context of the era, it is assumed that the vehicle was propelled by pistons driven by the compression of water, fire, and steam, as petroleum-powered engines had not yet arrived.
El Triunfo has become a must-see on the Baja California Sur roads, as it also has small attractions that enrich the visit even more, such as the Cactus Sanctuary or visiting the artisans of the El Rosario ejido.
Stopping by the local restaurants to eat their delicacies made with regional products is a great way to treat yourself to a gastronomic souvenir.
And if you’re looking for an overnight stay, El Triunfo also has what you need to relax and spend a day immersed in nature. Escape the ordinary and explore the timeless beauty of El Triunfo – a town that knew how to shine.
It is recommended to visit its three museums: the “Silver Route Museum,” where you can learn much more about the history of the area and the importance of the mining industry in the region; the “Music Museum,” which exhibits pianos and other musical instruments brought during the heyday of the gold and silver mining industry; and the recently opened “Cowboy Museum.”
Its picturesque church, built in 1751, is the first non-missionary church in the Three Californias. It is popular with tourists who come to appreciate the colorful styles used in traditional religious celebrations.
For history buffs, this is undoubtedly a dazzling place.
Walking through the passageways will lead you to discover captivating stories and legends, such as the English Cemetery, the Chinese Cemetery, and the Witches’ Cemetery. Many stories and legends are presented here, along with the way of life of those times, the beliefs that existed, and the marked classism that prevailed in a small but vibrant society. The large chimney called “La Ramona” is the star of this picturesque destination. Built in 1890, the smaller one, called La Julia, dates back to 1770. Visiting them will transport you and give you a deeper understanding of the great work carried out there. La Ramona, which stands over 35 meters tall, underwent repairs in 2018 due to concerns that it would continue to crack and potentially collapse during a hurricane or earthquake.
Not to mention the mine called “The Tunnel of Souls,” a now-abandoned mine that is one of the town’s tourist attractions. Here, you can learn about the two types of mineral extraction that were practiced many decades ago.
To date, this town has 475 inhabitants, who are dedicated to goat farming, selling handicrafts, selling local products, and running small food businesses.
Likewise, the film industry has used its natural settings for filming, both nationally and internationally.
Without a doubt, these towns, full of magic and history, still retain the sounds of those who walked their cobblestone streets, leaving traces of what once was a town full of life and prosperity. Today, the marks of those stories remain on their walls, reflecting the passage of time.
